Welcome to Mrs. Vazquez's Art Room
Who will be teaching your child art this year?
My name is Nova Vazquez and I teach art in grades K-5 at Binks Forest Elementary School in Wellington, Florida. Before moving to Florida, I was born and raised in New Jersey and have been teaching Art since 1999. I taught in several New Jersey schools including 15 years at Cherry Hill Elementary School in River Edge, New Jersey. I received my BA Degree from William Paterson University and I have my Masters Degree in Educational Technology from Ramapo College. My goal is to create a safe, enjoyable, environment for learning and growth in the visual arts. I look forward to working with your child this year. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected].
What will your child be doing in art class?
Everyone who walks through the door of my classroom is an artist. Some of us draw or paint pictures. Some create sculptures, make prints, or design web pages. We all have an artistic side. This is the area that will be developed in the art room to explore the frontiers of our own artistic personalities. This year, your children will be looking at art to learn about other cultures, places, and works of art. They will be trying different media and techniques and learning about the lives of famous artists. Your children will be talking about art to discuss meanings, ideas, feelings and moods as well as making art to create expressive visual images.
When will your child have art?
Students come to the art room in three day rotations for approximately 40 minutes every six days. Art can be very messy! Please have your child dress appropriately. Check with your child's teacher to find out what day they have art. If an accident occurs, try spotting with a liquid detergent before washing. All students are required to bring a smock to art. Due to health concerns, please send your child's smock to school in a ziplock bag.
How will your child be assessed?
I often hear a parent say, "Well, my child isn't a good drawer." or " He takes after me, I couldn't draw either!" I understand that with some students, the hand/eye coordination needs to be developed, and, much like a student who is having trouble learning to read, write, or play a sport, practice is the key. Also, a student's art grade isn't based solely on their drawing ability. Because I use a DBAE approach, there are steps that we will follow to reach a certain outcome. The outcome always allows for individual creativity. Take a look at the sample rubric so that you can get an idea of how a grade is earned.
